Get active in Richmond with Physical Literacy Street Team

Richmond is taking physical literacy to the
streets this summer.
The city’s Physical Literacy Street Team will
be attending several local events thanks to funding from The Association for
International Sport for All (TAFISA), which gave the city a $3,000 grant.
“We are honoured to be selected for funding
through TAFISA’s Take Back your Streets–Take Back Your Future program,” said
Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This program is designed to promote inclusive
and accessible physical activity opportunities for all within urban settings.
This partnership with TAFISA provides the opportunity to enhance the work
Richmond is already doing to promote physical activity for children and youth.”
The goal of the Richmond Physical Literacy
Street Team is to promote opportunities for children to develop the fundamental
movement skills they need to be confident in participating in physical activity
and sport throughout their lives.
Fundamental movement skills are often
perceived as something children will naturally develop. However, research
suggests that children need the opportunity to partake in a wide variety of
games and activities to develop fundamental movement skills such as kicking,
throwing, running, jumping and balancing. Children who are given this
opportunity are more likely to have the skills and confidence to participate in
physical activities for the rest of their lives.
